VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women's basketball team (13-16, 8-8 AE) was defeated 62-49 at Maine (16-15, 9-7 AE) in the final America East regular-season game for both teams on Sunday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center. As a result, the Bearcats take the No. 5 seed into next week's America East Tournament and will face off against Maine (the No. 4 seed) in a quarterfinal game next Saturday at approximately 2:15 p.m.
The first two rounds of the 2017 America East Tournament will be held at the Cross Insurance Center in Portland, Maine. Should the Bearcats defeat Maine, they will face either top-seeded New Hampshire or No. 8 Stony Brook on Sunday at 2 p.m. The complete first two rounds of the tournament will be carried live on ESPN3.
This marks the second consecutive season the Bearcats will carry the No 5 seed into the conference tournament. It also represents the second time in three seasons that the Bearcats and Black Bears will square off in the America East quarterfinals.
In Sunday's game at Maine, junior guard
Imani Watkins scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. She completes the regular season with 558 points, which is already the fourth-best total in program history. In addition, her 19.2 points per game is tied for second with Bess Greenberg, who had the same average during the 1998-99 campaign.
Sophomore forward
Rebecca Carmody finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Junior center
Alyssa James and freshman guard
Kai Moon each added eight points.
Binghamton trailed 31-17 at the half but rallied to within 44-40 on a three-point field goal by Carmody with 7:27 left in regulation. The Black Bears, however, answered with a 10-2 in the ensuing 2:36 to go up 54-42.
The Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 56-47 on a pair of free throws by freshman guard
Carly Boland with 3:08 left to go. Maine then scored six straight points during three minutes that followed to take a 62-47 lead with 42 seconds remaining.
NOTES: In the 2015 quarterfinal meeting, top-seeded Maine defeated No. 8 Binghamton 78-71. Last season, the No. 5 Bearcats beat No. 4 UMBC 49-41 in the quarterfinals. Both years, the first two rounds of thee America East Tournament were held at the Events Center ... the Binghamton program records for the most points in a season (576) and most points per game (21.3) were both set by Bess Greenberg during the 1999-00 campaign.
