Softball Sweeps Pair of Games in Final Day of Maryland Tournament

Richards has seven RBI as Bearcats beat Buffalo 9-2 and Terps 9-7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior third baseman Kate Richard hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs, powering Binghamton (5-10) to a pair of victories on Sunday afternoon at the Maryland Tournament. After beating Buffalo (3-19) 9-2, the Bearcats rallied for a 9-7 win over the host Terps (6-19-1) in the finale.

Richard finished the day 4-for-6 (.667) with two triples as well as her grand slam. She also scored twice and drew a pair of walks. Her on-base percentage was .750 and her slugging percentage was 1.833.

Also coming up big at the plate for Binghamton were junior outfielder Jessica Rutherford, who was 4-for-8 (.500), junior second baseman Stephanie Bielec, who went 3-for-7 (.429) and senior outfielder Gabby Bracchi, who was 2-for-6 (.333) and scored a team-best four times.

On the mound, freshman pitcher Rayn Gibson got both victories. She tossed 10.0 innings, struck out seven batters and posted an ERA of just 0.90.

Richard's grand slam came in the top of the first inning against Buffalo, which gave the Bearcats a quick 5-0 lead. It was the second grand slam of her career and her first (and the team's first) since she went deep against Albany back on April 19, 2015.

Richard is just the second player in Binghamton program history to hit two grand slams during her career. She joins Jessica Phillips, who belted a pair during the 2011 season.

Buffalo trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the first inning but the Bearcats got both runs right back in the top of the second inning. Senior outfielder Bridget Hunt tripled home Rutherford and scored on the same play due to a fielding error.

Richard played a role in Binghamton's final two runs against the Bulls. She led off the top of the fifth inning with a triple. Junior Carrie Maniccia pinch ran for her and later scored on a throwing error. One inning later, Richard singled home Bracchi.

Gibson, meanwhile, pitched the first six innings to improve to 2-4. Langlois Miller dropped to 1-7 with the loss.

Against Maryland, Richard opened the scoring with a two-run triple in the top of the first inning. After the Terps got a run back in the bottom of the frame, senior shortstop Crysti Eichner padded the lead to 3-1 when she scored on a wild pitch of the top of the second inning.

It was a six-run fifth inning, however, that was the key to the Bearcats' win. Down 7-3 entering the frame, the Bearcats needed only three hits and took advantage of two Maryland errors to stage their comeback. Hunt and Eichner drew bases-loaded walks and Bracchi finished the scoring with an infield single.

As for Gibson, she entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning and threw four shutout innings. Lauren Graves fell to 0-2 with the defeat.

For the weekend, Richard hit a team-best .417 (5-for-12) with a pair of home runs and nine RBI. She had four extra-base hits and finished with a 1.250 slugging percentage.

Binghamton's home opener, which was scheduled for Wednesday against Hofstra, has been postponed to April 25. The Bearcats are back in action next weekend with a three-game series at LIU-Brooklyn.
