Baseball splits opening America East DH

Bearcats win opener 1-0, drop nightcap 5-2 against UMass Lowell

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Binghamton baseball (9-4, 1-1 AE) split its opening America East doubleheader on Saturday against UMass Lowell, winning 1-0 and losing 5-2 in a twinbill played at Hartford's Fiondella Field.

In the opener, sophomore Nick Gallagher and junior Joe Orlando combined on a three-hit shutout and junior second baseman Luke Tevlin hit a 2-out, solo home run in the eighth inning to give BU the 1-0 win.

Gallagher went 5.2 innings, struck out seven and allowed just one hit. Orlando (W, 3-0) pitched the final 3.1 innings and surrendered just two hits with three strikeouts.

The Bearcats managed just two hits - one by senior first baseman Brendan Skidmore and the game-winning long ball by Tevlin.

Gallagher lowered his season ERA to 1.31 and Orlando kept his at 0.00. In 14.1 innings this spring, Orlando has yet to allow an earned run.

In the nightcap, Lowell snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth inning and then added four in the sixth to pull away. Binghamton got two runs in the top of the seventh but needed more time to rally in the traditional seven-inning Game 2.

Junior Nick Wegmann (L, 2-2) allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts in his 5.0 innings of work.

The Bearcats stranded nine baserunners.

Junior shortstop Paul Rufo went 2-for-4 and sophomore third baseman Justin Yurchak drove in a run.

The series was shortened to two games with inclement weather expected at Hartford's neutral field on Sunday. Binghamton next plays at Penn State on Tuesday night.
