Men’s Soccer Defeats George Washington 4-0 in Season Opener

Bearcats turn in highest-scoring performance since 2014

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Noah Luescher scored a goal and added an assist, leading Binghamton (1-0-0) to a 4-0 victory over George Washington (0-1-0) in the season opener on Friday night before 928 fans at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The four goals represents the Bearcats' highest-scoring game since defeating Stony Brook 5-1 back on Nov. 1, 2014. In addition, it also marks the program's biggest season-opening total goal since defeating Pitt-Bradford 4-0 to start the 1993 campaign.

Luescher was one of three newcomers to score in their Binghamton debut. He was joined by junior forward Chris Nkoghe, who transferred from Briar Cliff, and freshman forward Jack Muller. Junior forward Nikos Psarras scored the other goal.

"I thought our guys have done well during preseason and many of the things that we worked on were great tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We started off the match very well and everyone played great."

It didn't take long for the Bearcats to get going. Just five minutes into the game, Luescher fired a long pass to Nkogue who got by the defense. He then fired the ball into the left side of the net.

Muller had two chances in the first half to extend the lead but Colonials goalkeeper Thor Arne Hofs came up with a pair of close-range saves. The second stop came right at the end of the first half.

Just four minutes into the second half, however, Muller finally found the back of the net. He took a cross from senior back Charlie Novoth and slid it past Hofs, padding the lead to 2-0.

Less than six minutes later, Luescher made it 3-0 when he finished off a cross from sophomore forward Haris Brkovic.

The Colonials wouldn't give up and forced redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Alejandro Cubillo to make a pair of diving saves over the next 20 minutes.

Finally, in the 87th minute, Psarras got by the defense and took a long pass from freshman midfielder Lucas Arzan. He fired the ball in the net from close range, marking the season year in a row he has scored in the season-opening game.

Binghamton held a 12-11 lead in the final shot count.

Up next is a visit to defending Patriot League champion Colgate on Monday night a 7 p.m.

NOTES: Cubillo recorded his seventh career solo shut out … Binghamton has now won its season opener three times in the past four seasons … Luescher's three points in the highest total recorded by a Bearcat freshman since the program moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 2001.
