CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore forward
Ryan Reilly tapped in a long feed from classmate
Carly Barnett in the 83rd minute to snap a 1-1 deadlock and give undefeated Binghamton women's soccer (3-0) a 2-1 win at Cleveland State Friday afternoon at Krenzler Field.Â
After sophomore defender
Barbara Badeer's good work down the left flank resulted in a foul, Barnett took the ensuing free kick and sent it into the box and over the head of the Vikings' keeper. Reilly drove toward the net and knocked it in the net from close range for her second game-winning goal of the season.Â
"We wanted to make a statement to follow-up the opening weekend and we showed that with our resilience today," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Cleveland State had an athletic attack and hard defensive pressure and we had to play with quality to get a result on the road. We dealt with some adversity throughout the match and overcame it with our mentality. I'm really proud of this team's effort and they show more and more what this group is capable of accomplishing."
Binghamton rallied from a 1-0 hole after the hosts opened the scoring in the 19th minute. A ball played over the top of the defense led to a breakaway goal and an early deficit for the Bearcats.
But BU responded in the 32nd minute when redshirt junior forward
Kayla Saager drilled an 18-yard shot to the far corner for her second tally of the season. The Bearcats were dangerous throughout the first half and nearly scored off several of the six corner kicks they earned in the opening period. It took a diving save to stop a
Patty Loonie header from finding the net and another BU header was cleared off the line by a Cleveland State defender.Â
In the 65th minute, another BU chance was cleared off the goal line. But the Bearcats finally broke through in the 83rd minute.
Senior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis made six saves and BU outshot Cleveland State 12-11.Â
The 2-1 result was the third straight identical score. Binghamton's six goals this season already represent half of their entire output last season.Â
The Bearcats next host Niagara at 7 p.m. on Monday.Â
