Women's soccer hosts Fairfield Friday on ESPN3

Unbeaten Bearcats (3-0-1) face Stags at 7 p.m.; last home game for a month

VESTAL, N.Y. - Off to the program's best start during its Division I tenure, unbeaten Binghamton women's soccer (3-0-1) looks to keep it going when the Bearcats host Fairfield (1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Tim Heiman and former BU standout Dr. Kristie Bowers '07 providing commentary.

Binghamton followed up a trio of 2-1 wins with a 2-2 tie against Niagara on Monday. In that game, BU blitzed the Purple Eagles in the first half with 16 shots (16-3) and 11 corner kicks but had to settle for a 1-1 halftime score. Freshman forward Genna Michitti tallied her first collegiate goal early in the second half but Niagara answered in the 83rd minute and neither team converted through 20 minutes of overtime.

Redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager has been dominant up front in her first season playing with the Bearcats. Saager has two goals, four assists and eight points. She leads the America East in assists and ranks fifth in the nation. She also ranks 22nd in the country in points.

Freshman forward Essie Bonney and sophomore forward Ryan Reilly have two goals apiece. Reilly is third in the country with two game-winning tallies.

Senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis owns a 1.18 goals against average. She made several key stops in overtime to preserve the tie against Niagara.

Fairfield is coming off a 2-0 home loss to St. John's on Sunday. Before that, the team split a pair of extra-session games in Hawaii. The Stags began with a 2-1 double-overtime win over reigning NCAA tournament team Houston Baptist. Then Fairfield dropped a 2-1 overtime game to host Hawaii.

The team returns 21 letterwinners from a 3-13-2 squad that placed ninth in the MAAC last fall. Like the Bearcats, the Stags were strong on defense, limiting MAAC opponents to just one goal per game and losing eight games by the narrowest of margins. Reigning MAAC All-Rookie selection Melanie Hingher anchors the back line. Freshman forward Alex Madden and sophomore midfielder Julia McGuire lead the team with one goal apiece. McGuire's was the game-winner to beat defending Southland Conference champion Houston Baptist.

Fairfield won the only other meeting between the two teams, 2-0 to open the 2010 season. That game was played in Connecticut.

The game will be the first of three ESPN3 games for the Bearcats this season. The other games are Oct. 19 at Maine and Oct. 22 vs. Hartford at the Sports Complex.
