WASHINGTON D.C. – Junior forward
Nikos Psarras scored his fifth goal of the year and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Chris Shutler recorded a career-high 10 saves as Binghamton (2-3-1) played to a 1-1 tie at American (1-4-1) on Monday afternoon. The draw marked the second straight overtime match for the Bearcats.
Shutler was making his first start of the season. Other than allowing a goal in the 47th minute to Max Holdsworth, he was perfect thru 110 minutes. Two of his saves took place during the overtime periods.
Psarras, meanwhile, scored the game-tying goal in the 50th minute. He took a pass from freshman midfielder
Noah Luescher and shot it into the net from close range.
"I thought today was a highly competitive, highly combative match," head coach
Paul Marco said. "I thought our guys were pretty good today. We conceded a goal but came right back to tie it. There were a lot of 50-50 balls that could have gone either way."
Psarras has now scored in each of the last three games (netting four goals during that stretch). He has already tied his goal total from the 2016 campaign.
Luescher, meanwhile, now has four assists and is tied with Psarras for the team lead in total points (10). Earlier in the day, he was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. Through six matches, Luescher has recorded at least a point in five of them.
"We are pleased with how our attack has been so far this year," Marco said. "Nikos is a great target up front and Noah has been setting him up quite well."
The final statistics had American with a 25-6 shot advantage.
Binghamton returns home to face Columbia at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
