Women's soccer heads to Bryant Friday

Bearcats (5-1-2) and Bulldogs square off at 3 p.m.; BU looks to extend road unbeaten streak

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (5-1-2) puts its unbeaten road record on the line Friday afternoon when the Bearcats (3-0-1 on road) face Bryant (4-1-1) at 3 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I.

After four days off, BU will play two games in three days to conclude the team's 2017 non-conference schedule. After the Bryant game, BU will head to Brooklyn to face LIU on Sunday.

The Bearcats have lost just once in eight games, their best start since the program's America East championship season in 2004. Facing a daunting seven consecutive road games that will stretch the entire month of September, BU has opened that stretch by winning three straight away from home. The most recent result was a 2-0 win at Cornell last Sunday. In that game, Redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager extended her points streak to eight games and sophomore forward Ryan Reilly added a first-half goal to pace Binghamton. The Bearcats' defense, meanwhile, recorded its second shutout in the last three games, limiting the Big Red to six shots. Senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis recorded three saves to lower her season goals against average to 0.98.

Saager ranks sixth in the nation in points (16) and her total is already the highest BU total in the last nine years. She ranks ninth in the country in goals (6). Reilly has three goals - two of them for game-winners, which ranks 24th in the nation.

Bryant has beaten back-to-back America East opponents in their last two games. The Bulldogs edged Stony Brook (1-0) and Maine (2-1) and earlier, tied UMass Lowell (0-0). The team's only loss was a 2-1 overtime defeat at Quinnipiac on August 30.

The Bulldogs returned two all-conference players and their leading scorer from an 8-9-1 team that finished fifth in the NEC last fall. They were picked to finish fifth again this year. Junior midfielder Alison Guilmette (1-3=5) and sophomore forward Remi Manna (2-1=5) lead the team in points production. Senior Rachel Brightman (0.67 GAA) and freshman Meghan Dalton (0.60) are sharing the goalkeeping duties with Brightman giving way to Dalton at half of most games.

This is just the third game all-time between the two schools. Last season, Bryant posted a 1-0 win at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Back in 1999 when both programs were Division II members, Binghamton posted a 5-0 home win.
