BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sophomore forward
Haris Brkovic scored twice and redshirt freshman back
Kurt Wesch added a goal and an assist, powering Binghamton (3-4-1) to a 5-1 victory at Canisius (6-2-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The victory, which was aired live on ESPN3, came against a Golden Griff squad that had won its previous six games.
Binghamton blew open a tight game with four second-half goals. Three of those goals -- including both by Brkovic -- came in a span of 2:30, giving the Bearcats a 4-0 lead in the 56th minute.
The five goals is the Bearcats' highest single-game total since their 5-1 win over Stony Brook on Nov. 1, 2014. The four second-half goals is Binghamton's highest total since it also netted four goals in the second half against Houston Baptist on Sept. 4, 2011.
"Tonight's result was a true indication of how our team played," head coach
Paul Marco said. "Everyone played great tonight. Canisius is a very good team and it was a much tighter game than the score indicated. But our effort was outstanding on both ends of the field."
Wesch had the lone goal in the first half, as he fired a shot from the top of the box which deflected off a defender and into the net. It came in the 34th minute and was his first collegiate goal.
The second-half fireworks started when a cross by Wesch was headed in by freshman forward
Jack Muller at the 52:56 mark of the game. It was Muller's second goal of the season.
Just 32 seconds later, Brkovic scored from the top of the box to make it 3-0. It was his first collegiate goal and was assisted by redshirt senior captain
Charlie Novoth.
The 32-second gap between goals breaks the program record of 36 seconds, set on Oct. 20, 2007 against Maine.
Brkovic didn't have to wait long to net his second career goal. He stole the ball from a Canisius defender and beat the goalkeeper at the 55:26 mark.
From there, play settled down and the Golden Griffs finally got on the scoreboard when Hakeem Milson scored in the 63rd minute. Lucian Preis was credited with the assist.
Finally, junior forward Nikos Psarras finished off the scoring in the 87th minute. His goal, which was his team-best sixth of the season, was assisted by junior midfielder
Harrison Weilbacher.
The final shot count was 21-16 Binghamton.
For the second straight game, redshirt sophomore goalkeepers
Chris Shutler and
Alejandro Cubillo each played 45 minutes. Shutler played the first half.
Up next for Binghamton is a Tuesday game at Cornell at 7 p.m.
NOTE: Brkovic is the second Bearcat player to score twice in a game this season. Psarras had a pair of goals against George Mason back on Sept. 8 ... the program record for the fastest three goals is 1:37, which also came in the 2007 game against Maine.
