DURHAM, N.H. - Host New Hampshire (7-3, 1-0 America East) snapped a 1-1 tie in the 83rd minute and defeated Binghamton women's soccer (6-2-3, 0-1 AE) 2-1 Sunday afternoon from Bremner Field. It marked another tightly-contested game between the two programs. Seventeen of the 19 all-time games between the two schools have been decided by one goal or less.
All three goals were scored in the second half and BU's was a spectacular tally from redshirt junior forward
Kayla Saager. Down 1-0 after UNH scored in the 64th minute, Saager put on a dribbling clinic to even the score in the 73rd minute. She took a pass 35 yards away from goal from freshman midfielder
Chloe Tracy, spun and split two defenders then dribbled toward goal. She then sidestepped another defender and cut her dribble back to elude a fourth defender before ripping a low 12-yard, right-footed shot into the left corner. Saager, who entered the game ranked sixth in the country in points and 13th in goals, added to her totals with her eighth goal in 11 games.Â
But for the second time in the game, the Wildcats did their damage down the right side and tallied the game winner just over 10 minutes later. An open run down the right led to a cross in the middle and a finish to the far post.Â
"I was disappointed in the opening half," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We were far too passive and allowed our opponent to set the tempo and be the aggressor. I'm proud that we changed our mentality at the beginning of the second half. We were perhaps a bit unfortunate to give up the first goal when we did but we showed grit and character to come back before UNH sealed it with their second goal. We must learn and mature from this and know it will take a complete team effort for 90 minutes to get results in the America East. We hope to show that full effort Thursday (at Albany)."
Senior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis made five saves, including a pair of big stops in the first half when UNH had the better of play. The Wildcats held a 9-2 shots advantage in the opening period before the Bearcats picked up their play.Â
UNH finished with a 17-11 margin.
Binghamton finally finishes off its month-long run of seven consecutive road games with a Thursday night tilt at Albany.Â
