HARRISONBURG, Va. – Marcelo Acuna scored twice, leading No. 15 Virginia Tech (2-2-0) to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Binghamton (2-2-0) in the final round of the James Madison Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
In an evenly played first half, it was the Bearcats who struck first. Junior forward
Nikos Psarras scored his second goal of the season in the 34th minute. He took a pass from freshman midfielder
Noah Luescher and fired the ball into the net from close range.
Binghamton was able to protect the lead until the Hokies were awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Acuna converted the attempt, which was his second goal of the year.
Eleven minutes later, Acuna scored the game winner on an unassisted goal.
"I thought we played very well today but we are disappointed not to have gotten the win," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We got a fantastic goal from Nikos and Noah in the first half but give Virginia Tech credit, they are a great team and played well today."
The final shot count was 19-12 Virginia Tech.
In goal, redshirt sophomore
Alejandro Cubillo finished with four saves.
Luescher now has two goals and a pair of assists so far this season. He has at least one point in three of the Bearcats' four games so far this year.
Up next for the Bearcats is a Friday game at George Mason at 7:30 p.m.
