Women's soccer blanks Iona 2-0

Hayes, Saager score 43 seconds apart in first half; BU improves to 4-1-1 with shutout

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Dora Hayes and redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager scored goals 43 seconds apart in the 15th minute of the game and Binghamton women's soccer (4-1-1) went on to a 2-0 road win over Iona (1-5) Sunday morning from Mazzella Field.

Playing the team's third game in seven days and the first of seven straight on the road, BU rode a great start to the team's first shutout win of the season.

"The last two games ... wins got away from us," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "What I liked about today was that we came out strong and got a two-goal cushion and held onto it. We did our part, managed the game and got the win. We're on a journey throughout the season and we've gotten a little bit better each week."

Hayes scored a memorable goal for her first collegiate tally. She stole a ball from a Gaels' defender in the final third, cut to her right and unloaded a 28-yard shot into the upper side netting just 14:13 into the game.

Saager took her turn less than a minute later when she dribbled on the right side of the field and never out of range, ripped a 30-yard shot to the far corner for her fourth goal of the season. Saager leads the America East in points (12).

The Bearcats held a 15-11 shots advantage and BU keepers only had to make five saves in sharing the shutout. Senior Katie Hatziyianis made two saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Mackenzie Hanna, who recorded three stops in the second half while making her collegiate debut.

Binghamton next plays at Lafayette on Thursday night.
