Women's soccer plays at Lafayette Thursday

Bearcats bring 4-1-1 mark into 7 p.m. tilt with Patriot League foe

VESTAL, N.Y. - Riding the team's best start since the 2004 championship season, Binghamton women's soccer (4-1-1) continues its extended road swing with a Thursday night match at Lafayette. The Bearcats and Patriot League member Leopards (2-2) kick-off at 7 p.m. at Oaks Stadium in Easton, Pa.

Binghamton is coming off a 2-0 road win at Iona on Sunday - the first of seven straight away games that will span the entire month of September.

The Bearcats continued their offensive success against the Gaels, scoring twice in the game's first 15 minutes and cruising from there. Head coach Neel Bhattacharjee's squad has cashed in two goals in five of its first six games this fall. The only game BU didn't get a pair of goals, was a 2-1 overtime loss against Fairfield in a game that BU delivered 19 shots.

Six different Bearcats have scored goals this season and BU has 11 goals already, one shy of tying the entire season total from last year's team.

Redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager is the reigning America East Player of the Week and points leader with four goals and four assists. Saager, a two-time weekly award winner already this fall, has registered at least one point in all six games.

On defense, senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis (1.18 GAA) and a stout back line have limited four of six opponents to a goal or less, including the shutout of Iona.

Lafayette is coming off a 5-0 loss to Villanova on Sunday. Before that, the Leopards had back-to-back wins over NJIT (2-1  OT) and Delaware State (3-1). The team was picked to finish seventh (of nine) in the Patriot League Preseason Poll after graduating seven starters from a 7-8-4 team. Two of the team's top losses came at the offensive end, where they combined for 11 goals and eight assists. Junior midfielder Katie Brannigan leads the team with two goals and five points.

Binghamton leads the all-time series 3-1. Last fall, Lafayette posted a 1-0 win in Vestal to snap BU's three-game win streak in the series.
