Women's soccer falls at Stony Brook 4-0

Bearcats own 12-10 shots margin but Seawolves score twice in each half

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - In a battle between the second place and third place teams in the conference standings, host Stony Brook (8-5-1, 3-0-1 America East) scored twice in each half and made good on its only four shots on goal to pin a 4-0 loss on Binghamton women's soccer (7-5-2, 2-2 AE) Thursday night from LaValle Stadium.

Midway through the first half, the Seawolves bunched a pair of goals in a 1:52 span - both on runs down the left followed by crosses and finishes at the far post.

Down 2-0 at half, BU  pressured early in the second, looking to get on the board. Sophomore midfielder Dora Hayes had an opening in the 58th minute but her shot was blocked by the Seawolves keeper. Then 30 seconds later, senior forward Kayla Saager was tripped as she dribbled into the box but the spot was deemed outside for a 19-yard free kick. Saager's ensuing shot was saved by the keeper. Binghamton is one of just two conference teams yet to be awarded a penalty kick this season.

Binghamton held a 12-10 edge in shots.

Stony Brook capped the scoring with goals in the 63rd and 78th minutes.

"Tonight was a bit of an unusual game," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Typically you don't outshoot an opponent and have a 4-0 scoreline. But we knew coming in that Stony Brook had excellent attacking personalities and they were very efficient in taking their chances well. Our group never gave up and battled and one bounce or one call could have changed things. We had some good individual performances to build off and will regroup quickly to host a talented UMass Lowell team on Sunday."

The Bearcats return home to host UMass Lowell at 1 p.m. on Sunday to wrap up a busy Homecoming Weekend, which will also include the team's Alumni Game on Saturday afternoon.
