Wrestling Hosts No. 9 Cornell Friday Night

Dual scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Events Center

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton wrestling team kicks off the dual portion of its schedule hosting No. 9 Cornell this Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Events Center. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3. This is the first time in five years the two teams will meet in a dual setting. 

"We're excited for tomorrow night," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "We haven't faced Cornell in a number of years and they're perennially one of the top programs in the country. It'll be great to get back into the Events Center and see how we stack up against the Big Red."

  • The Bearcats feature three grapplers in the rankings heading into the dual Friday night
  • R-Fr. Lou DePrez is ranked as high as #13, returning NCAA qualifier Frankie Garcia at #17 and Vincent DePrez at #21
  • Binghamton had five wrestlers place at the 2018 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, highlighted by a 1st place finish at 125 lb by redshirt sophomore Audey Ashkar
  • Steven Bulzomi finished fourth at 125 lb, Vincent DePrez second at 174 lb, Anthony DePrez fourth at 197 lb and Joe Doyle fifth at HWT
  • The tournament title at 125 lb was the first of Ashkar's career
  • Binghamton finished 5th of 20 teams at the Open with 300 team points
  • The Bearcats are coming off of one of their best seasons to date, finishing in seventh place overall at the 2018 Eastern's, marking the highest finish in program history
  • Binghamton had five place winners in the tournament, sending two wrestlers to nationals - Garcia and Steven Schneider
  • The Bearcats went 12-5 overall with a 6-1 EIWA mark for the regular season

  • Seven NCAA qualifiers return — Chas Tucker (133), Yianni Diakomihalis (141), Jon Jay Chavez (165), Brandon Womack (174), Max Dean (184), Ben Honis (197) and Jeramy Sweany(285)
  • Returning champion Diakomihalis joins Chavez, Womack (2017 at 165) and Dean as returning All-Americans in the lineup

Series History
  • Cornell leads the all-time series 7-0
  • The series began in 1971-72, when the two teams met in a quad meet in Cortland with the Big Red outscoring the Bearcats 97.5-53.5
  • The closest meet in series history came in Cornell's 22-21 win on Jan. 5, 2012 in Vestal, N.Y. The Big Red won on criteria after ending the meet tied 21-21 having had scored more points in the individual matches. 
  • The Big Red won the last meeting between the teams 33-6 on Nov. 23, 2013 at Newman Arena
