LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore
Jake Miller and freshman
Reid VanScoter combined to throw 7.0 scoreless innings in relief and Binghamton baseball (2-2) rode a three-run second inning to a 4-2 win over host Liberty (4-1) Friday afternoon at Liberty Baseball Stadium. The game was broadcast on ESPN3.Â
With the Bearcats up 3-0, Miller (W, 1-0) entered in the third inning in a tight spot. Liberty had the bases loaded and no out but after the Flames scored a pair, Miller used two strikeouts and a groundout to limit the damage and keep BU ahead 3-2. He then left the bases loaded in the fourth and exited in the sixth inning unscathed after VanScoter spelled him. VanScoter struck out Liberty's clean-up hitter with two runners on and then induced a fly ball to leave the bases loaded. VanScoter worked the final 3.2 innings and didn't allow a hit with three strikeouts to earn his first collegiate save. Miller worked 3.1 innings and scattered three hits with three strikeouts.
In all, BU pitchers left 14 baserunners stranded and only allowed five hits.Â
Offensively, Binghamton sent nine men to the plate in the top of the second inning and scored three runs on four hits.Â
Sophomore third baseman
Justin Drpich belted a 1-out, solo home run over the wall in center field. A single by first baseman
Shane Marshall (3-for-4) and walks to freshman second baseman
Jake Evans and senior DH
Pat Britt loaded the bases. Freshman right fielder
Andrew Eng then sent a blast to the wall in right field that was hauled in by a diving Flames outfielder, but the sacrifice fly made it 2-0 Bearcats. Senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak followed with an RBI single through the left side for a 3-0 lead.Â
The Bearcats got an insurance run in the sixth inning when Marshall hit a two-out double down the left field line and came in to score on an RBI single by Britt.Â
With the three hits, Marshall raised his average to a team-best .538 (7-for-13).Â
The teams continue the weekend series with a single game at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Senior right-hander
Jacob Wloczewski (0-1, 6.23 ERA) takes the hill for the Bearcats.Â
