RICHMOND, Va. - Host VCU (8-8) completed a series sweep of Binghamton baseball (3-9) with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at The Diamond. The Rams won 2-1 and 18-3. The Bearcats played the series without two injured starting infielders and their No. 3 and No. 5 hitters in the lineup.
In the opener, BU outhit VCU 8-7 but the Rams built just enough offense with single runs in the third and fifth innings. Down 2-0, BU got one run back in the eighth inning but couldn't pull even.
Senior starter
Nick Wegmann (L, 1-3) went 6.0 innings and allowed one earned run on six hits. Wegmann struck out five before giving way to sophomore
Jake Miller, who pitched a clean 2.0 innings (1 hit).
Junior outfielder
Anthony Meduri went 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior designated hitter
Jason Agresti went 2-for-4.
The Bearcats missed golden scoring opportunities in the third and fourth innings, putting runners on second and third with one out in each inning. But both times they were left stranded. VCU used a one-out single, stolen base and RBI single to score its first run. Two innings later, the Rams added an unearned run on a double, single and infield error.
In the eighth, freshman first baseman
Shane Marshall singled through the left side and went to second on an Agresti groundout. Meduri then plated Marshall with an RBI single to right for BU's lone run.
In Game 2, BU led 2-1 before the wheels came off in the fourth inning. VCU scored seven runs in the fourth and seven more in the sixth to widen the gap. The hosts wound up with 21 hits and BU hurt its case with four errors.
Agresti went 2-for-3 and freshman shortstop
Jake Evans went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Junior starter
Nick Gallagher (L, 0-3) was lifted after three innings and six BU pitchers saw action in the lopsided defeat.
Binghamton has a week to prepare for its America East opening series at Stony Brook. The Bearcats are the two-time defending regular season champions and have gone a combined 34-9 against conference opponents in that span.
