RICHMOND, Va. - Binghamton baseball (3-4) erased a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the seventh and then hung on over the final two innings to post a 5-4 win over Richmond (5-4) Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.Â
After being held scoreless on one hit through six innings, BU rallied in the decisive seventh.
Senior designated hitter
Luke Tevlin drove a ball to right that the Richmond outfielder lost in the sun to begin the frame and Tevlin scampered all the way to third. With one out, sophomore left fielder
Daniel Franchi drew a walk. Senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak then laced an RBI double to center field, scoring pinch runner
Sean Trenholm with the tying run. With runners on second and third, junior right fielder
Anthony Meduri followed with an RBI single to center to give the Bearcats a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Another run came in on a Spiders' infield error before senior catcher
Jason Agresti made it 4-1 with an RBI single to right. Binghamton plated four runs on three hits with two Richmond errors in the inning.
The Bearcats tacked on another run (unearned) in the eighth before the hosts made things interesting in their final two at-bats.
Richmond used a two-run double to tighten the score in the bottom of the eighth (5-3). That brought senior reliever
Joe Orlando into the game and with the tying run at the plate, Orlando recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.Â
Ahead 5-3, BU put runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the ninth but couldn't extend its lead.Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Richmond hit a single and an RBI double to make it 5-4. With the tying run on second, Orlando again struck out back-to-back hitters to end it. He worked 1.2 innings and struck out five to pick up his first save of the season.Â
Sophomore reliever
Jake Miller (W, 2-0) went 3.1 innings and scattered five hits and two runs. Senior starter
Jacob Wloczewski worked the first four innings and only allowed two hits and a run with four strikeouts.
Krowiak went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and RBI. Krowiak is hitting .355 with a team-high seven RBI in seven games.Â
Agresti went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.Â
The teams continue the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday. Senior left-hander
Nick Wegmann (1-1, 3.60 ERA) gets the start for the Bearcats.Â
