VESTAL. N.Y. - Senior pitchers Jacob Wloczewski and Nick Wegmann combined for eight one-hit innings but visiting St. John's (10-7) used an unearned run and three tack-on tallies in the ninth inning to defeat Binghamton (4-12) 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. The homer opener against the BIG EAST power Red Storm was played on a brisk day after snow in New York City forced a move upstate in venues.

Wloczewski (L, 0-4) didn't allow a hit in his 4.0 innings but was the hard-luck loser after St. John's scored an unearned run in the third inning. An infield error on a double play ball and a stolen base to a vacant bag at third led to an RBI groundout and a 1-0 Red Storm lead. 

Wegmann allowed a flare single to shallow center to his first batter and then didn't waiver for the rest of his 4.0 clean innings. He struck out three and lowered his season ERA to 3.77. 

The Bearcats, meanwhile, couldn't cash in on several golden scoring opportunities in the middle innings and wound up stranding eight baserunners. Binghamton put runners on base in six of the first seven innings. 

In the fifth, freshman second baseman Jake Evans lashed a 3-2 pitch down the right field line and raced all the way to third for a leadoff triple. But a strikeout, soft groundout and line out to second left Evans stuck at third.

In the sixth inning, BU looked to have tied the game on a double to the wall by senior catcher Jason Agresti. Senior shortstop Paul Rufo reached on an infield throwing error to open the frame. Rufo then rounded the bases on Agresti's blast and appeared to easily beat the relay throw but was called out at the plate. After a walk, BU had runners on first and second with one out but a fly ball and hard liner to right ended the threat. 

In the seventh, the Bearcats put their leadoff hitter aboard again when Evans hit an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt moved Evans into scoring position with the potential tying run, BU had a fly ball to center and another live drive out to second base. 

The Red Storm padded their lead with three runs on five hits in the ninth. A bloop single, chopper that bounced over third base for a double and a lazy fly ball that was lost in the sun did the primary damage.

Evans and Agresti each went 2-for-4 to pace the offense. 

Each team had six hits.
