Softball rallies for 6-5, eight-inning win over Rider

Benn scores walk off run on a wild pitch

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman outfielder Sarah Benn scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning as Binghamton (4-10) defeated Rider (2-14) 6-5 in the opening day of the UMBC Invitational. The Bearcats twice overcame a two-run deficit to post their first extra-inning victory of the season.

With the score tied at 5-5, Benn was placed on second base to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning in accordance with the NCAA rule for extra-inning games. She reached third on a sacrifice hit by senior outfielder Carrie Maniccia. Two batters later, she scored the winning run.

Binghamton trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning but came up with three runs during the frame. Senior third baseman Kate Richard singled home a pair of runs and scored two batters later on a double by freshman shortstop Mikayla Alvarez.

Rider came right back with three unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to go up 5-3. Sophomore designated player Kassidy Seary, however, trimmed the deficit to 5-4 with a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bearcats were one out away from defeat when freshman first baseman Alex Guay scored the tying run on a throwing error.

Sophomore pitcher Rayn Gibson went the distance, raising her record to 1-5. She allowed just two earned runs and struck out a career-high eight batters. Emily Oltman took the loss, dropping her record to 1-5.

Alvarez finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 while senior second baseman Stephanie Bielec drew three walks.

Richard now has 120 RBI for her career, which continues to rank fourth all-time in program history.

Binghamton faces St. Peter's at 9 a.m. and Rider at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday as play concludes at the UMBC Invitational.
