Softball Wins 4-2 at Cornell in 12 innings

Bearcats win longest game in program history since 2010

ITHACA, N.Y. – It took nearly three hours but Binghamton (6-11) claimed a 4-2, 12-inning victory at Cornell (7-10) in a non-conference softball game on Tuesday afternoon at Nieman Robinson Field. The win is the Bearcats' third in their past four games.

The 12 innings ties the most in a single game in Binghamton's program history. Four other times a game has gone into 12 innings with the most recent occurrence being a 6-4 win over Georgia Southern on Feb. 19, 2010. In addition, the time of the game (2:57) represents the fifth longest in program history.

The Bearcats broke open a 2-2 tie in the top of the 12th inning when senior third baseman Kate Richard led off with her fourth home run of the season. Three batters later, freshman outfielder Sarah Benn doubled home an insurance run.

In the bottom of the 12th inning, sophomore pitcher Rozlyn Price retired the Big Red in order.

For most of the game, Cornell held on to a 1-0 lead. Finally, in the top of the sixth inning, freshman catcher Hannah Lyons tied the game at 1-1 when she singled home sophomore designated player Kassidy Seary.

Four scoreless innings followed but senior outfielder Carrie Maniccia broke the tie on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning. Cornell, however, tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame on a two-out single by Erin Rockstroh.

Price raised her record to 3-5 with the win. She pitched six innings in relief and did not surrender an earned run. The loss was tagged to Katie Lew, who pitched eight innings in relief, but fell to 1-3 on the season.

"I thought our pitchers did a great job and stayed composed even thought they did not have much offensive support early," head coach Michelle Johnston said. "We had some really good quality at-bats in the second half of our lineup."

Senior second baseman Jillian Bovitt finished the game with a career-high four hits. Richard, Seary and Benn each collected a pair of hits
Binghamton heads to Colgate on Saturday for a noon doubleheader.

NOTE: The 2010 game against Georgia Southern marked the first win at Binghamton by Johnston. She was named the program's head coach in July 2009.
