Baseball splits doubleheader at UMBC

Bearcats drop opener 6-1, win nightcap 5-3

CATONSVILLE, Md. - Senior designated hitter Pat Britt hit a go-ahead solo home run in the fourth inning and senior shortstop Paul Rufo went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace Binghamton baseball (5-15, 2-4 America East) to a 5-3 win over UMBC (7-15, 4-2 AE) and a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The host Retrievers won the opener 6-1.

The Bearcats fell behind 2-0 after two innings before rallying. Rufo hit a two-run double in the third inning to even the score. One inning later, Britt connected for his first home run of the season and junior right fielder Anthony Meduri added an RBI double to give BU a 4-2 lead. UMBC got one run back in the bottom of the fifth but junior reliever Robert Brown (1.2 IP) and senior Cal Lawrence (1.0 IP) kept the Retrievers off the board over the final 2+ innings. Lawrence (1.59 ERA) notched his first save of the season. Binghamton added its final run on a balk call in the seventh.

Junior starter Nick Gallagher (W, 1-4) earned his first win of the season. Gallagher scattered six hits and three runs with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

Senior catcher Jason Agresti scored twice.

In the opener, UMBC jumped on BU pitching for five runs in the first two innings and the Bearcats left 12 runners stranded to squash any comeback bid. Freshman first baseman Shane Marshall brought in Binghamton's lone run in the fourth inning with a single. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore reliever Ben Anderson pitched 4.2 shutout innings in relief. He allowed three hits and struck out three, lowering his season ERA to a team-best 2.25.

Binghamton next hosts Bucknell at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
