RICHMOND, Va. - Binghamton baseball (3-6) scored in three of the last four innings and had the tying runs on base in the ninth but lost to Richmond (7-4) 6-4 in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field.Â
Freshman right fielder
Andrew Eng went 3-for-5 and delivered a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning to keep BU's rally alive. But an infield pop-up with the tying run on first ended the game.
Down 5-0, the Bearcats scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and added two runs in the ninth before the Spiders held on. Binghamton outhit their hosts 10-9 but left 12 runners stranded.
Richmond scored once in the second inning and then broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, courtesy of three hits and two walks.Â
After being blanked for five innings, BU got on the board in the top of the sixth. Freshman first baseman
Shane Marshall reached on a fielder's choice and Eng moved him along with a single. Senior pinch hitter
Luke Tevlin then hit an RBI single down the right field line. It was the only time in the game that BU strung two consecutive hits together.Â
In the seventh, senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak reached on an infield error and senior shortstop
Paul Rufo followed with a walk. Senior catcher
Jason Agresti hit an RBI single to center, making it 5-2. But with two runners on and only one out, the Bearcats missed an opportunity to tighten the score furthere with back-to-back groundouts.Â
The Spiders added an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to go out 6-2.
In the ninth, freshman pinch hitter
Sam Freedman reached on an infield error, Rufo singled and Agresti walked to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Eng kept the rally alive with his third hit of the game but BU could draw no closer.
Junior starter
Nick Gallagher (L, 0-2) went 3.1 innings before four relievers shared the final 4.2 innings.Â
Binghamton returns to Richmond on Friday for a three-game weekend set at VCU.Â
