Women's Lacrosse edged by Canisius 13-12

Bearcats fall just short with 16 seconds left to play

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team fell 13-12 to Canisius Monday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss moves the Bearcats to 3-3 overall on the season.

"We gave a lot of effort out there today but unfortunately fell just short time wise," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "We were proud of the battle by our players and will take this as a learning opportunity to change and refocus for Friday."

Back and forth in the first half of play, Canisius held an 8-6 lead going into halftime. Senior Jacqueline Kennedy put the Bearcats on the board on an unassisted shot for the first of three consecutive Binghamton goals. Arthur scored just ten seconds after on an assist from Kennedy, before senior Callon Williams found the back of the net to put the Bearcats up 3-1. Canisius finished the first half on a 7-3 run, taking an 8-6 lead into halftime.

Williams scored her second of the day just a minute into the second half, pulling the Bearcats within one. The Golden Griffs scored four goals to Binghamton's two in the next 15 minutes of play. The duo of senior Tiffany Ryan and junior Emily Yoo combined for the two BU goals, keeping Binghamton within reach with a 12-9 score. Canisius's Jen Reininger scored her sixth goal of the game and the Golden Griff's final with ten minutes to go. The Bearcats then scored three consecutive goals by Arthur, Ryan and junior Rebecca Golderman. The Bearcats fell just short of tying the game with 16 seconds left in the second half, after Golderman scored a free position shot to close the gap 13-12. Senior Brianne Arthur tried to get a shot off as time ran out, but a save by Canisius sealed their victory.

Kennedy finished the game with two goals and one assist, totaling for three points, and securing four draw controls. Arthur finished the game with two goals while Ryan recorded a hat-trick with three. Sophomore Taylor Passuello picked up a team-high four ground balls in the net.

The Bearcats are back on the field on Friday, March 9 against Ohio State. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start time at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
