CLEARWATER, Fla. – Senior outfielder
Jessica Rutherford drove in three runs, leading Binghamton (3-6) to a split of its final two games in Florida. The Bearcats won 6-4 over Northern Kentucky (6-4) in the opener but lost 3-0 to Central Michigan (7-7) in the finale.
Rutherford had the decisive hit in the win over Northern Kentucky, with a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to break up a 4-4 tie. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore pitcher
Rozlyn Price retired three of the four batters she faced to pick up her first win of the year.
The Bearcats fell behind 3-1 after two innings but Rutherford trimmed the deficit in half with a RBI single in the top of the third inning. Freshman outfielder
Lauren Martinez doubled home the tying run in the top of the fourth inning and scored the go-ahead run two batters later on a single by freshman shortstop Mikayla Alvarez.
Northern Kentucky tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielding error. The Bearcats, however, settled down defensively and did not allow a run over the final three innings.
In the second game against Central Michigan, however, Binghamton was held scoreless and left 12 runners on base. Senior third baseman
Kate Richard had two of the Bearcats' five hits.
Binghamton is off until March 16-18, when it heads to the St. John's Tournament.
