Baseball settles for 5-5 tie at Cornell

Bearcats outhit Big Red 12-7; Game halted in 10th inning due to darkness

ITHACA, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (9-15-1) rallied from a 4-0 hole to force extra innings at Cornell (5-14-1) before the teams had to settle for a 5-5 tie due to darkness.Ā

The Bearcats outhit the Big Red 12-7 but left 12 men stranded, including the bases loaded in both the ninth and 10th innings. After BU couldn't take advantage of a leadoff double in the top of the 10th, the umpires halted the game with diminishing daylight before Cornell could bat in the bottom of the frame.

Cornell used a two-run home run to key a three-run outburst in the second inning. The Big Red added another run in the third inning to build a 4-0 cushion.

In the fourth inning, the Bearcats cut their deficit in half with two runs. With one out, senior catcher Jason Agresti and senior shortstop Paul RufoĀ singled, putting runners on first and third. Senior first baseman Luke Tevlin brought in the first run with an RBI grounder. After a single by freshman designated hitter Sam Freedman, sophomore third baseman Justin DrpichĀ hit an RBI single to make it 4-2. Freedman was thrown out at home on the play.Ā

In the sixth inning, BU drew even when AgrestiĀ led off with a double off the wall in left field and RufoĀ followed with a two-run home run over the wall - his third of the season.Ā

One inning later, the Bearcats took a 5-4 lead when junior second baseman Alex Baratta led off with a solo home run to left - his first of the season.Ā

But Cornell countered in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single and RBI double.Ā

Binghamton had great scoring opportunities in each of the last three innings but stranded eight runners. In the eighth, RufoĀ reached on an infield error and Freedman followed with a double, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. But a fly ball and strikeout ended the threat. In the ninth, BU loaded the bases thanks to a single and back-to-back walks but couldn't get the key hit. In the 10th, Freedman led off with a double but an infield pop-up and fly ball left freshman pinch runner Jake Evans stuck on the bag. Two walks loaded the bases but another infield pop-up was the final play of the game.Ā

The Bearcats made several outstanding defensive plays to erase Cornell baserunners. In the fourth, the hosts had a runner on third with one out when a strikeout required a throw down to first. The runner broke from third on the throw but TevlinĀ fired back to AgrestiĀ to tag him out and complete the double play. Then in the ninth, Cornell combined a walk and a single and the lead runner was headed to third before junior right fielder Anthony MeduriĀ fielded the base hit and fired a bullet to Drpich to erase him. On the next play, AgrestiĀ shot down a would-be base stealer at second to end the inning.Ā

Freedman went 3-for-5 with two doubles. RufoĀ was 2-for-3 with two RBI and AgrestiĀ went 2-for-4 with his team-high 10th double and two runs scored.Ā

Four BU pitchers limited the Big Red to seven hits - just four over the final seven innings. Freshman Ryan Lambert worked 3.0 innings of one-hit pitching and classmate Josh Kopcza went the final 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.

Binghamton's make-up game at Penn State on Wednesday has been cancelledĀ so BU next heads to Hartford for a three-game America East series this Friday and Saturday.
