Baseball splits DH at CCSU to end regular season

BU wins 2-0, loses 5-4; Bearcats can make AE tourney if Albany drops pair Sunday

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Binghamton baseball (18-30-1) split a doubleheader at Central Connecticut State (18-28) Friday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field, winning 2-0 before losing the nightcap 5-4. The pair of games served as the conclusion of the regular season for the Bearcats, who are still hopeful of a postseason berth. If UMBC sweeps a doubleheader from visiting Albany on Sunday, BU will claim the sixth and final playoff spot for the America East tournament, which begins next Wednesday in Maine.

In Friday's opener, juniors Nick Gallagher (W, 4-7) and Robert Brown (S, 4) combined on a four-hit shutout and sophomore third baseman Justin Drpich drove in both runs as BU made good on its five hits.

Scoreless after four innings, BU pushed one run across in the fifth. With two out, freshman second baseman Jake Evans doubled down the right field line. Drpich then ripped a double into left field, scoring Evans with the game's first run. Two innings later, sophomore outfielder Daniel Franchi led off with a single and stole second. Evans moved him to third with a groundout and Drpich doubled BU's lead with a sacrifice fly to center.

Gallagher allowed just one hit (single) in 4.0 innings. He struck out three and lowered his season ERA to 4.52. Brown scattered three hits in his three scoreless frames, lowering his stellar ERA to 0.93.

In Game 2, the Bearcats led 4-2 before CCSU won the game with three runs in its final at-bat (6th). In that decisive frame, the Blue Devils used four hits and two stolen bases to erase the two-run deficit. The hosts had a two-out, two-run single to score the tying and winning runs.

Down 2-0, BU had rallied to take the lead with three runs in the fifth and the Bearcats added another run in the top of the sixth.

In the fifth, junior outfielder Sean Trenholm belted a leadoff home run over the wall in left field - his second of the season. That put BU on the board. Two ensuing singles and a walk loaded the bases and then a double-play grounder brought in the tying run. Junior third baseman Greg Satriale, who had singled earlier in the inning, raced home with BU's third run on a wild pitch.

In the top of the sixth, senior DH Pat Britt hit a leadoff double and with one out, went to third on a wild pitch. Britt scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher TJ Wegmann.

Four BU seniors pitched in the game, with starter Nick Wegmann going 4.0 innings and allowing five hits and one earned run.
