VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Dora Hayes headed in a corner kick in the 66th minute to give Binghamton women's soccer (1-0-1) a 1-0 win over visiting Marist (0-1-0) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Hayes made a run near the far post and headed in a service from senior forward Kayla Saager to provide all the scoring Binghamton needed. The Bearcats held a 10-6 shots margin and maintained the bulk of possession throughout. 

"I'm proud that we didn't have a mental hangover from Friday night's game," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Less than 48 hours later, we knew it would be a grinder affair but we did a good job. Marist played very compact but we stayed patient and were able to get some breakdowns and respond better in the second half. We look to take advantage of set piece goals and the goal started with Kayla's service from the corner. The timing was excellent for Dora to be on the other end of it." 

In the final 35 seconds, Marist had a handful of dangerous moments inside the box but BU's defense blocked two shots to quell the threat. 

Freshman Haylee Poltorak and sophomore Mackenzie Hanna split the shutout in goal. Poltorak made one save in the first half and Hanna added two stops over the final 45 minutes. Poltorak's stop was a diving save to her left off a shot inside the box with 10:38 left in the half. She also charged to pick off a dangerous cross in the final minute of the half. Hanna also was sharp, charging to snuff out a 1-v-1 thru ball in the 69th minute. 

Saager' assist gives her four points in the first two games of the season. The reigning America East Striker of the Year ranked 29th in the country in points per game last season (1.53/game).
