VESTAL, N.Y. - Riding a four-game unbeaten streak but looking for the team's first road win of 2018, Binghamton women's soccer (5-3-2) heads to Burlington to face Vermont (2-5-2) on Sunday in the America East opener for both teams. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Virtue Field.
The Bearcats have posted three straight shutout wins and have only allowed two goals in their last 470 minutes spanning five games. Binghamton has been idle since a 4-0 win over LIU last Sunday. That four-goal outburst was the team's highest since pumping in five goals against Iona in 2014.Â
Senior forward
Kayla Saager leads the team and conference with eight goals and 18 points. She ranks eighth in the nation in goals and 12th in points. Saager is the reigning America East Offensive Player of the Week, joining freshmen
Haylee Poltorak and
Kayla MacKenzie in a first-ever Bearcat sweep of the weekly awards last week.
Poltorak has anchored a stellar defensive unit with excellent between the pipes. She has three solo shutouts and a 0.61 goals against average this season.
MacKenzie earned top rookie honors after combining steady back line work with the game-winning goal over LIU. She has pushed forward from her left back spot to score two goals in the last three games.
In the rematch against a Catamounts team that eliminated BU from the 2017 playoffs, the Bearcats will need to reverse a few trends to post a victory. Binghamton is just 3-11-2 all-time in America East openers and the team is 0-4-2 in the last six years. The last BU win in its conference opener came in 2011 - a 3-0 victory at Maine. Also, head-to-head, BU has struggled with Vermont of late. The Catamounts have won four straight in the series (and have a 9-8 edge overall), including the last three all by shutout. In fact, BU hasn't scored a goal against Vermont in more than 310 consecutive minutes. Binghamton is also looking for its first road win of the season after starting out 0-3-2 in non-league away action.Â
Vermont posted a 1-0 home win over Siena on Thursday. The Catamounts' other win was a 1-0 road win at Sacred Heart on Sept. 9. The teams have two common non-league opponents this fall (Marist and Bryant). The Bearcats beat both Marist and Bryant by identical 1-0 scores. Vermont, meanwhile, lost to Marist (2-0) and Bryant (1-0).Â
The Catamounts are led offensively by senior forward Aly Spencer, who has three goals. In net, sophomore Kacey Lambertson has a 1.18 goals against average with two shutouts. Vermont was picked to finish sixth in the Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Bearcats were tabbed fourth. Â
