Men’s Soccer Defeats Hartford 2-0 in AE opener

Flesch and Muller each score their first goals of the season

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior back Kevin Flesch and sophomore forward Jack Muller each netted a goal, leading Binghamton (2-5-2, 1-0-0 AE) to a 2-0 win over Hartford (0-6-3, 0-1-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victory is the Bearcats' first in a conference opener since 2015, having played to draws the past two seasons.

Flesch and Muller both finished off crosses. In the fourth minute, Flesch headed in a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Noah Luescher. Muller's goal, meanwhile, came in the 60th minute when he headed in a long cross by senior midfielder Harrison Weilbacher.

At the other end of the field, redshirt junior goalkeeper Chris Shutler made four saves – all in the second half – to record his second solo shutout of the season.

"I thought the guys were great tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "Our attacking guys were good in the run of play and on set pieces, we were quite dangerous. Overall, it was complete performance by the team and I couldn't be prouder of them at this moment."

"We worked a lot on our crosses and set pieces this week," Muller said. "Our timing has been off so far this season, so we really made that a priority during training. Harrison's ball to me was perfect, so I owed it to him to finish it off."

Binghamton out shot Hartford 11-8. In the first 45 minutes, the Bearcats had a 7-1 advantage.

Up next for Binghamton is its annual Family Weekend Game against No. 23 New Hampshire next Saturday at 2 p.m. The Wildcats (6-1-1, 1-0-0 AE) defeated UMBC 1-0 at home on Saturday in their first conference game of the season.

NOTES: Luescher has a goal and an assist in the past two games. He leads the team with three assists … Shutler, who was named the America East Defensive Player of the Week back on Sept. 10, now has four career solo shutouts … the attendance of 602 for the match against Hartford was the Bearcats' largest of the season … New Hampshire will be the second ranked opponent to visit the Bearcats Sports Complex this season. Binghamton played then No. 18 Colgate to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 14.
