BURLINGTON, Vt. - Host Vermont (3-5-2, 1-0 AE) scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute and edged Binghamton women's soccer (5-4-2, 0-1 AE) 1-0 in the America East opener Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field. The loss snapped BU's four-game unbeaten streak and kept them winless in their last five games against the Catamounts.Â
The Bearcats applied constant pressure in the first half and moved the ball around the field with relative ease. Binghamton had several outstanding scoring chances and held a 10-2 shots cushion at the break. Among the dangerous opportunities were a pair by sophomore midfielder
Ivana Pjetri in the 24th minute. Pjetri took a through ball from senior forwardÂ
Kayla Saager and had two cracks from eight yards out but both were blocked by a UVM defender. Six minutes later, BU had a near miss off a Saager corner kick. She sent a curling ball to the back post where two Bearcats missed subsequent chances. Â
After the break, Vermont balanced the game in the second half and broke through with the winner, scored on a wide-angled shot to the far post.Â
"Today we had a strong plan and attacked the game the way we wanted to for the first 45 minutes," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Unfortunately we didn't sustain that level for the entirety of the match. Vermont upped their game and pressure and we did not show enough mental strength and resolve on our end. We lost our quality and that unfortunately is on us. We have to rebound quickly and try to get a road result on Thursday at UMBC."
Binghamton finished with a 17-11 shots advantage and had a 5-1 corner kick edge.
Freshman keeper
Haylee Poltorak made four saves.Â
The Bearcats return to action Thursday night at UMBC.Â
