Carly Boland scored a game-high 19 points and senior forward
Rebecca Carmody added 16 points and eight rebounds, powering Binghamton (9-12, 4-4 AE) to a 73-62 win over Hartford (14-8, 7-1 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The win is the Bearcats' second in their last three games and broke the Hawks' nine-game winning streak.
Boland went 7-for-14 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Carmody, meanwhile, was 7-for-12 from the field and also added four assists and a pair of steals.
Hartford came into the game leading the America East in scoring defense (56.3 ppg.) but the Bearcats shot a season-best 51 percent from the field (26-of-51) and drained nine of their 21 field goal attempts (42.9 percent). The 73 points ties Binghamton's highest-scoring output of the season.
In addition, the Hawks also led the conference with 13.00 steals per game. Binghamton, however, held an 11-9 edge in that category.
"This was a great team win for us tonight," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Our players have been in the gym working hard and it really paid off tonight. We shot the ball well, hit our free throws and everyone played a big role tonight."
With the score tied at 23-23 with 1:34 left in the second period, Binghamton closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 30-25 lead at the break. Carmody punctuated the run with an offensive rebound and a layup at the buzzer.
Hartford pulled to within 42-40 on a layup by Sierra DaCosta with 5:40 left in the third period but the Bearcat went on a 12-4 run to go up 54-44 heading into the fourth period. Carmody had a team-best five points during that stretch.
Binghamton showed no signs of slowing down in the final period, taking a commanding 65-46 lead with 6:42 left in regulation. The Bearcats were then able to protect their double-digit lead by going a perfect 6-for-6 during the last 2:21 of the game.
Junior guard
Kai Moon finished with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. She went 7-for-9 from the free throw line, including a perfect 4-for-4 during that final 2:21 stretch.
Sophomore forward
Olivia Ramil had eight points and a career-high four blocks. Freshman
Annie Ramil also had eight points, sinking both of her field goals and all four of her free throws.
Lindsey Abed led Hartford with 13 points while Jade Young added 12 points.
Binghamton held a 43-29 edge in rebounding and scored 19 second-chance points. From the free throw line, the Bearcats were 12-of-14 (85.7 percent).
The Bearcats host Albany on Saturday at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Carmody now has 949 points for her career and remains in 19th place all-time in program history. She is three points away from tying Alicia Koppenhoffer (1994-98) for 18th place with 952 points … for the season, Carmody continues to lead the Bearcats with 13.2 points per game and leads the America East with 8.0 rebounds per contest ... the last time Binghamton shot 50 percent from the field in a game was on Nov. 21, 2015 vs. Cedar Crest 34-60 (.567).
