VESTAL, N.Y. – Shania Johnson scored a game-high 26 points, powering Stony Brook (13-3, 2-1 AE) to a 65-56 win over Binghamton (6-10, 1-2 AE) Wednesday night in an America East women's basketball game at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. It marked the Bearcats' first home game of 2019.

Johnson, who came into the game ranking third in the conference in scoring (16.7 ppg.), netted 11 of her points in the fourth period as the Seawolves held off a furious Binghamton rally. She also finished with seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Junior guard Carly Boland led the Bearcats with 18 points while senior forward Rebecca Carmody finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. It marked her fourth double-double of the season and eighth of her career.

Stony Brook blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Bearcats 25-5 to take a 36-18 lead at the half. India Pagan, who finished the game with 19 points, led the Seawolves with seven points while Johnson added six points during that stretch.

Binghamton pulled to within 48-42 on a layup by Boland with 9:45 left to go in regulation. Stony Brook, however, answered with five straight points to take a 53-42 lead with 8:35 remaining.

A 9-2 Binghamton run trimmed the deficit to 55-51 with 3:51 remaining. Boland punctuated the run with a three-point play.

From there, however, Johnson took over the game. She scored eight of the Seawolves' final 10 points of the night, which included a pair of three-point field goals and a reverse fast-break layup.

Stony Brook finished with 21 assists and scored 27 of their points off of Binghamton turnovers.

Sophomore forward Olivia Ramil added 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks for the Bearcats.

Binghamton returns to host UMBC next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Carmody continues to lead the Bearcats in scoring (13.4 ppg), rebounding (7.6 ppg.) and assists (2.9) … Boland is now averaging a career-best 10.4 points per game. She has averaged 20.5 points in the past two games.
