VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Hartford (7-5-1, 4-1 America East) made good on its only quality scoring chance and that goal in the 34th minute stood up as the winner in a 1-0 victory over Binghamton women's soccer (8-5-2, 2-3-1 AE) Thursday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Binghamton outshot its guests 10-2 and had more possession time but couldn't convert and instead suffered the team's third straight loss.
"I loved our fight and spirit and how we competed today ... but unfortunately the game didn't go our way," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Hartford had one really special moment and converted. We created some of those high quality moments but we just didn't convert. Sometimes the game is just that simple. I'm pleased with the effort though. Postseason is still there for the taking with two games remaining but we have to make sure we do everything we can in terms of maximizing those potential results."
The Bearcats had a good chance less than three minutes into the game when junior forward
Dora Hayes had a 12-yard shot but her bullet went straight to the Hawks keeper.Â
In the 34th minute, Hartford senior midfielder Sierra Stone gained position outside the box, dribbled and unleashed a 20-yard strike to the top corner. It was the Hawks' lone shot of the half.Â
Binghamton had a golden chance to tie it with just over two minutes remaining in the half but had a flurry of three failed opportunities inside 10 yards. Freshman midfielder
Olivia McKnight fed junior forward
Sarah Dibble on a break in on the right side. As she closed in on goal, Dibble slid a square ball into the middle, where Hayes struck it from seven yards. The Hartford keeper made the save and the ball caromed back to McKnight, who one-timed it toward goal. The shot rolled to the right, where Dibble redirected it from the doorstep, but Dibble's chip was snared over her head by the sprawling keeper, who hadn't yet stood up after the initial shot. Â
As both teams managed the brisk temperatures and strong wind, the second half lacked significant scoring chances. Binghamton had one final chance with 3:15 remaining when Hayes sent a ball from the right side to the far post. Junior back
Erin Theiller, who was moved up front to help spark a potential game-tying attack, put a head on it from close range but again, it went square into the keeper's hands.Â
Binghamton is off for 10 days before playing at UMass Lowell on Oct. 27. The team then concludes the regular season by hosting UMBC on Halloween night.Â
