The Binghamton wrestling team fell to No. 9 North Carolina State by a score of 28-9 Saturday evening in Vestal. The Bearcats were able to pick up two wins early, but four straight major decisions helped carry the Wolfpack to the finish line.
"We lost this match offensively tonight," head coach
Kyle Borshoff said. "Everyone can see the fight we have and how hard we wrestle, but if we aren't offensive it doesn't matter how hard we fight. I think if we found a little more offense, some of those matchups change."
Highlights
(The match began at 197 pounds)
- With the Bearcats trailing 3-0, RS sophomore Joe Doyle made quick work of N.C. State's Deonte Wilson in the heavyweight battle, recording a pin at the 0:22 mark of the first round.
- This marks his second pin in as many duals, and he gave Binghamton a 6-3 edge before the lineup turned over.
- Following a decision loss at 125 pounds, RS sophomore Zack Trampe won a 3-1 decision over No. 14 Jarrett Trombley. The bout was tied at one, but a late takedown from Trampe in the third round sealed the victory, putting the Bearcats up 9-6.
- Four straight major decision losses took the wind out of the team's sails and gave N.C. State the win.
- The final matchup between No. 4 Lou DePrez and No. 12 Trent Hidlay was a battle. With the score tied at one, the bout went into OT. The score remained the same after 60 seconds and Hidlay held down DePrez for the first 30 seconds before escaping late in the second 30-second period to win 2-1.
"Hidlay came in with a great game plan," Borshoff said. "We have some adjustments to make, but feel like that's a matchup we'll win in the future."
