Women’s Basketball Beats Siena 89-62 in Season Opener

Moon pours in career-high 29 points, Bearcats shoot 41 percent from the field

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior guard Kai Moon finished with a career-high 29 points, leading Binghamton (1-0) to an 89-62 win over Siena (0-1) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday afternoon at the Times Union Arena. The victory marks the second straight season-opening triumph for the Bearcats.

Moon went 7-for-16 from the field, 4-for-8 from three-point range and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. In the process, she recorded the highest-scoring game by a Binghamton player since Imani Watkins scored 35 points at New Hampshire on Jan. 27, 2018.

The 89 points for the Bearcats represents their highest-scoring total since they netted 91 points against Cortland on Nov, 13, 2017. As a team, Binghamton shot 41 percent for the game (32-78) and went 10-of-21 (48 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.

Senior guard Carly Boland, who graduated from nearby Shenendehowa High School, had a successful homecoming. She finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and game high six assists. Boland played multiple high school games in the Times Union Center during her career.

Junior forward Olivia Ramil added 14 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore forward Annie Ramil, meanwhile, had eight points and tied Boland for the team high in rebounds.

"I thought we did very good on the offensive end," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "The people who needed to knock down shots did tonight. For us to be successful, Carly Boland needs to put up big number and she did. Kai Moon in her first game of the year was terrific."

Binghamton set the tone in the opening quarter, going up 24-13 after 10 minutes. Moon scored nine of her points during that stretch and the Bearcats as a team shot 50 percent (9-of-18).

Siena got to within 29-21 with 7:11 left in the first half. From there, however, the Bearcats blew the game open with a 13-1 run to go up 41-22 with 2:38 left in the first half. Boland punctuated the run with a three-point field goal.

The Bearcats had their highest-scoring output in the third period, tacking on 27 more points to go up 74-46. Sophomore guard Hayley Moore ended the period with a three-point field goal at the buzzer from well beyond the arc.

Freshman guard Denai Bowman scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in her debut.

Sabrina Piper led Siena with 16 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists.

Binghamton turned the ball over just eight times and scored 23 of its own points off of turnovers. It also held a 47-37 advantage in rebounding.

Binghamton hosts Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.

NOTES: The 29 points by Moon represents the most points scored by a Binghamton player in a season-opener during its 19-year NCAA Division I level. Watkins had 26 points against Bucknell on Nov 11, 2016.
