CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Beatrice Mompremier finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds and a pair of blocks, powering Miami (6-3) to a 79-56 win over Binghamton (9-1) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night at the Watsco Center. The loss snapped the Bearcats' nine-game unbeaten streak to start the season.
The Hurricanes, which were ranked in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll last week, are currently the first team receiving votes. Miami was also receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) Top 25 Poll earlier in the season.
Binghamton's nine-game winning streak was the seventh longest in program history. The nine wins to start the season remains the second-best start in program history.
Despite the loss, senior guard
Carly Boland finished with a game-high 22 points. She shot 8-for-15 from the field and was 4-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc.
Led by Mompremier – who was a first-team All-American last year -- the Hurricanes used their size advantage to pull away from the Bearcats. They held commanding advantages in both rebounding (58-30) and points in the paint (52-18).
For most of the first half, Binghamton held its own against Miami, pulling to within 25-23 on a jumper by junior forward
Kaylee Wasco with 6:57 left in the second period. From there, however, the Hurricanes scored 13 straight points to go up 38-23 at the break. Jamir Huston punctuated the run with a buzzer-beating three-point shot.
Binghamton was able to stay within range through most of the second half. Boland's jumper with 7:58 left in the fourth period closed the gap to 59-46.
Once again, however, Miami was able to pull away, going on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to ice the game.
"Miami is a great team with great athletes," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We played tough tonight but couldn't make a lot of our shots and they were able to grab most of the rebounds."
Junior forward
Olivia Ramil added 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward
Annie Ramil grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a career-high five assists.
As has been the case most of the season, Binghamton finished with a positive assist to turnover ratio (17:16).
Earlier in the day, CollegeInsider.com released its weekly Top 25 Mid-Major Poll and Binghamton is receiving votes for the third straight week.
Binghamton stays in Miami for the Florida International (FIU) Holiday Hoops Showdown. The Bearcats face Austin Peay on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the opening round. Host FIU and Grambling State square off in the other first-round game at noon.
NOTE: The game against the Hurricanes was the Bearcats' fourth all time against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Binghamton faced Miami in 2008 and 2009 as well as Notre Dame last season … Binghamton started the 1996-97 season 12-0 … Boland now has a pair of games with at least 20 points for her career. She netted a career-high 23 points at New Hampshire on Jan. 5, 2019.
