Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Men's basketball edged by Colgate at wire 82-74

Sarr (24 pts.) and Tinsley record double-doubles; Mills nets season-high 21 in narrow defeat to ranked Raiders

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Colgate (6-3) shot 50 percent and put all five starters in double figures to fend off Binghamton men's basketball (4-5) 82-74 Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

The Bearcats trailed 75-74 with 2:31 left before the reigning Patriot League champion Raiders scored the game's final seven points as BU misfired on its last four shots. The larger game-ending 11-3 run stretched Colgate's win streak to five games.

Senior forward Pierre Sarr scored a game-high 24 points and added 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and freshman forward George Tinsley notched his America East-leading fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Brenton Mills added a season-high 21 points, 15 coming in the second half when BU nearly rallied from a nine-point halftime hole.

Colgate led by as many as 13 points in the first half before Sarr (9 pts.) and Tinsley (8) helped BU bring it back to a 40-31 margin at intermission.

In the second half, the Raiders pushed their lead back up to double digits, 59-48, with 12:23 left before a 23-12 Bearcats push tied the game at 71-71 with 4:22 left. Sarr had nine points during the stretch and Mills added seven, including a 3-pointer that tied the game. But Colgate made its final four shots and converted 3-of-4 free throws in the final 1:08 to seal the win.

Binghamton finishes its run of three straight Patriot League opponents when former America East member Boston University comes to town on Sunday. Tip is 2 p.m. on Hall of Fame Day at the Events Center.

NOTES
Sarr has recorded double-digit rebounds in four straight games, lifting his season average to 8.6 (fourth in AE) ... Tinsley is averaging 10.7 rebounds in his last seven games and has moved into third in the conference in rebounding (9.4) ... it's the second time this season that BU has had two players record a double-double in the same game (Tinsley and Sessoms vs. Sacred Heart) ... Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms (18.0 ppg.), Tinsley (12.4), Mills (12.2) and Sarr (10.5) give BU four players averaging in double figures for the first time in 12 years.
