DePrez, Sparacio highlight team’s efforts in Vegas

The Binghamton University wrestling team completed action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Sunday afternoon. Lou DePrez and Anthony Sparacio highlighted the team's efforts by making it to the second day of the tournament, and competing against some of the nation's top wrestlers.

DePrez went undefeated Friday, winning three bouts (with two against ranked opponents). His 7-4 decision over Nebraska's Taylor Venz highlighted the day and sent him into the 184-pound semifinal, where he met defending national champion, No. 1 Zahid Valencia.

Valencia went on to win that bout via major decision and eventually won the title. DePrez struggled over his remaining matches, and slipped to sixth place overall for the invitational.

Sparacio was a win away from placing, as he had a strong showing in the consolation bracket. He won his first bout over Clarion's Taylor Ortz, 6-4 before falling to No. 7 seeded Mitch Moore.

In the consolation bracket, he picked up two wins before being ousted by NC State's Tariq Wilson on the round of eight. Sparacio was wrestling from behind almost the entire match, but nearly put Wilson on his back at the end of the third round. In the end, he just ran out of time and fell, 4-2.

Joe Doyle also had a pin in his second matchup of the day Friday to round out the Bearcat victors.
