NORTHRIDGE, Calif – Sophomore first baseman
Alex Guay finished with a career-high three RBI, powering Binghamton (1-0) to a 9-3 win over Cal-State Bakersfield (3-2) in the opening game of the CSUN Early Bird Classic on Friday afternoon at the Matador Diamond. The second scheduled game between the two teams was canceled due to rain and will not be made up.
The nine runs scored in the first game represents the Bearcats' highest run total in a season opener since beating Oneonta 10-0 to start the 1992 campaign. The victory is also the Bearcats' first season-opening win since defeating South Florida 1-0 on Feb. 14, 2014.
"I thought we came out ready to play," head coach
Michelle Johnston said. "We were relaxed but also focused and it was a great team effort."
Sophomore outfield
Lauren Martinez and junior catcher
Sara Herskowitz each added a pair of RBI. On the mound, junior
Rayn Gibson scattered three runs on six hits and struck out four batters in 6.0 innings of work.
Guay stroked a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning, putting the Bearcats ahead 2-1. Martinez then keyed a three-run bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run, which padded the lead to 5-1.
After Cal-State Bakersfield got a run back in the top of the fourth inning, Binghamton blew the game open with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Guay doubled home a run and Herskowitz capped the frame with another two-run double.
Gibson is now 1-0 while the loss was tagged to Julie Lewis, whose record dropped to 0-1. Sophomore pitcher
