HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior pitcher
Rayn Gibson allowed just one unearned run on four hits and recorded a complete-game victory as Binghamton (5-6) gained a split in the opening day of the James Madison Softball Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park. The Bearcats were defeated 15-0 by the host Dukes (14-5) – who are currently ranked No. 22 in the nation – in the first game before rebounding to beat Rutgers (14-11) 2-1 in the nightcap.
Gibson improved her record to 3-2 on the season. Against Rutgers, she shook off an unearned run in the top of the first inning to fire six shutout innings. She finished the game with three strikeouts and issued only a pair of walks.
Offensively, sophomore outfielder
Lauren Martinez went 2-for-3 and scored both of the Bearcats' runs. She led off the bottom of the second inning with a double and tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Sarah Herskowitz. Two innings later, Martinez belted a one-out triple and advanced home on a throwing error.
The five total bases by Martinez ties her career high, which she set against UMBC on April 7, 2018. She is now hitting a team-best .310 this season.
Defensively, Binghamton rebounded from their first-inning miscue and did not commit an error the rest of the game.
Whitney Jones of Rutgers was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 7-7.
"I thought Rayn did a great job and kept getting stronger as the game went on," head coach
Michelle Johnston said. "Our defense also made some great plays and helped limit extra opportunities for them offensively."
Earlier in the day, the nationally-ranked Dukes came up with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and tacked on eight more runs in the fourth inning to record the mercy-rule victory. Megan Good belted a grand slam while Logan Newton and Madison Naujokas each drove in a pair of runs.
Odicci Alexander tossed a four-hit shutout, raising her record to a perfect 8-0. Freshman pitcher
Morgan Bienkowski fell to 0-3 with the loss.
"We didn't play well against James Madison so I was happy to see us bounce back and keep our composure against Rutgers," Johnston said.
Freshman second baseman
Marissa Braito hit a team-best .600 during the two games, going 3-for-5 in the process.
Binghamton has games against St. Joseph's at 9:30 a.m. and Morgan State at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in the final day of the James Madison Invitational.
NOTES: Gibson's win was the 19th of her career. She continues to rank eighth during Binghamton's 18-year NCAA Division I era in that category. It also marked the 19th complete-game of her career, which ranks seventh during the program's Division I era … James Madison's ranking is in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 Poll.
