BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Binghamton softball team (6-9) was swept 12-0 and 9-1 by No. 24 Virginia Tech (23-4) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Tech Softball Park. Both games were decided in five innings.
Freshman shortstop Marisa Braito, who earlier in the day was named the America East Rookie of the Week, finished the day 2-for-4 and scored the Bearcats' lone run. She also drew a walk to finish with a .600 on-base percentage.
After scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning of the opener, the Hokies blew the game open with 10 run in the second inning. Mackenzie Lawter finished the game with two home runs and four RBI.
Carrie Eberlie improved to 14-1 with the victory while freshman pitcher
Morgan Bienkowski fell to 0-4 with the loss.
In the nightcap, Virginia Tech scored three times in the bottom of the first and fourth innings to go up 6-0. Braito broke the shutout in the top of the fifth inning when she scored on a throwing error.
The Hokies then sealed the walkoff win with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Keely Rochard raised her record to 9-3 while junior pitcher
Rayn Gibson was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 3-4.
Emma Strouth led the Hokies with four RBI in the second game.
It is last six games, Binghamton has faced a nationally-ranked team three times. The Bearcats faces then No. 22 James Madison this past Saturday.
Binghamton heads to Furman on Thursday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
