Baseball powers past Kennesaw State 12-6

Marshall goes 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, Drpich drives in three runs as BU gains series split

KENNESAW, Ga. - Binghamton plated 12 runs on 12 hits and toppled host Kennesaw State 12-6 Wednesday afternoon at Stillwell Baseball Stadium. It was BU's sixth win in the last eight games and allowed the Bearcats to gain a split in the abbreviated two-game series with the Atlantic Sun member Owls.

Binghamton used a pair of four-run innings to do the bulk of the damage and was aided by four Kennesaw errors and seven walks.

Already ahead on a game-opening home run from junior left fielder Daniel Franchi, BU struck for four runs in the top of the third inning. The big blow was a two-out, bases-clearing double off the bat of junior third baseman Justin Drpich.

Kennesaw trimmed its deficit with two runs in its half of the third and another in the fourth.

But BU countered with two runs in the fifth - RBIs from senior first baseman Matt Tsukroff and sophomore shortstop Jake Evans - and another run in the sixth on a two-out, RBI single by sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall.

In the eighth, BU capped its offensive production with another four-spot. Sophomore right fielder Andrew Eng hit a two-run double and two more runs scored on two walks and an error.

Freshman left-hander Thomas Babalis (W, 1-0) earned his first collegiate win with 3.0 innings of work. He only allowed two hits. Classmate Jack Collins also had a strong stint with 3.0 innings of three-hit ball. Collins struck out five.

Marshall went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, Drpich collected three RBI, Evans and Franchi went 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece and junior second baseman Alex Baratta reached base and scored three times. The home run in the first inning was Franchi's team-leading third of the spring.

The Bearcats return home to host Maine in the America East opening series for both teams this weekend. Weather permitting, the teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and a single game Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.
