ROCK HILL, S.C. – Ashely Westbrooks homered three times and finished with 10 RBI, powering Winthrop to an 11-5, 7-2 sweep against Binghamton (8-12) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Terry Field. With the victory, the Eagles take two of three games during the weekend series against the Bearcats, who concluded their eight-day, 11-game Spring Break road trip.
Sophomore shortstop
Marissa Braito led the Bearcats with a .571 batting average during the afternoon (4-for-7). She finished the three-game series 5-for-11 (.455) and continues to lead the Bearcats with a .344 batting average for the season.
Junior outfielder
Stephanie Ragusa finished 3-for-7 (.429) while junior designated hitter
Rozlyn Price and freshman outfielder Chole Morgan both hit .333 (2-for-6).
Binghamton appeared to be in control of the opener, going up by as much as 5-0 in the top of the third inning. Ragusa, Braito and Morgan each had a RBI during that first part of the game.
Westbrooks, however, keyed a four-run bottom of the third inning with a three-run home run. She then belted a grand slam one inning later, giving Winthrop an 8-5 lead.
The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kiley Majette got the win, raising her record to 4-8. Junior pitcher
Rayn Gibson, meanwhile, was tagged with the loss and is now 4-5.
Ragusa and Braito each finished 2-for-4 in the first game. Braito had a double and a triple to record a career-high five total bases.
Westbrooks opened the scoring in the nightcap with a RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles tacked on a second run one inning later on a RBI single by Taylor Charlton.
Sophomore first baseman
Alex Guay tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run the top of the fourth inning. It was her second home run during the series and gives her a team-best 13 RBI so far this season.
The Eagles came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and padded the lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Westbrooks capped the scoring with a two-run home run -- her third and final homer of the day.
Madyson Watson improved to 6-3 with the victory while sophomore pitcher
Chelsea Howard dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
Sophomore third baseman
Sarah Benn finished the series against Winthrop 4-for-9 (.444) while Guay hit .429 (3-for-7) with two home runs and five RBI. Guay also drew four walks to finish with a .636 on-base percentage.
Binghamton returns to campus for its home opening doubleheader on Wednesday against Cornell at 3 p.m.
