Baseball falls to Stony Brook 6-3

Drpich hits 3-run home run but Seawolves rap 12 hits, take rubber game of series

VESTAL, N.Y. - First-place Stony Brook (20-11, 9-3 America East) collected 12 hits and turned three double plays to hold off Binghamton (14-14, 4-4 AE) 6-3 in the rubber game of their three-game series Sunday morning at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.

The Seawolves only scored in two of nine innings but it was enough. The visitors plated four runs in the second and their final two in the seventh. Binghamton got three runs back in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-out, three-run home run from junior third baseman Justin Drpich. But BU couldn't cash in on its remaining chances, despite putting the leadoff hitter on in three of five middle innings. The Bearcats were limited to five hits (by five different players) and hit into double plays in the third, sixth and seventh innings.

In the second inning, Stony Brook used a leadoff double just inside the bag at first and three more hits to jump ahead 4-0.

Binghamton answered in its half, thanks to Drpich's second home run of the season. After freshman first baseman Kevin Gsell singled and classmate Zachary Taylor walked with two out, Drpich belted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field to bring BU to within one, 4-3.

The teams then worked through four scoreless innings before Stony Brook built some insurance with two runs on three hits and a costly BU error in the seventh. Seawolves closer Sam Turcotte struck our four over the final two frames to seal the win for starter Bret Clarke.

Freshman starter Thomas Babalis went 6.2 innings and struck out five, allowing five runs. Sophomore Josh Kopscza didn't allow an earned run in 2.1 innings of relief.

Binghamton next hosts Marist at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
