Baseball beats UMass Lowell 4-1

Freshman pitcher Babalis earns third win of season with 7.0 IP; freshman 1B Gsell hits 3-run HR for first collegiate

LOWELL, Mass. - The freshmen tandem of Thomas Babalis and Kevin Gsell led Binghamton baseball (15-17, 5-6 America East) to a 4-1 road win over UMass Lowell (9-27, 6-9 AE) Sunday morning at LeLacheur Park. In taking the series finale, BU snapped a four-game losing streak and pulled to within a game of second place in the crowded America East standings.

Babalis (W, 3-1) allowed just three hits and a run in 7.0 innings and Gsell launched a three-run home run to pace the offense.

Binghamton scored three runs in the second inning and added a fourth run in the third frame. The host River Hawks scored their lone run in the sixth at the teams combined for just one run over the game's final six innings.

In the second, sophomore catcher Sam Freedman singled with one out and senior right fielder Anthony Meduri followed with a single. Gsell then took a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field for his first collegiate home run.

One inning later, junior second baseman Alex Baratta singled with one out and stole second. With two outs, Freedman hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Baratta for a 4-0 BU cushion.

Babalis gave up two singles and then a leadoff home run in the sixth - the only damage UML could manage. Babalis retired the River Hawks in order in two of his final three innings and wound up with six strikeouts. Senior Robert Brown worked the eighth inning, allowing two bunt singles before stranding both with a foul fly and strikeout. Freshman Jack Collins notched his second safe of the season after working a 1-2-3 ninth with three pop-ups.

Freedman and Meduri had two hits apiece.

Binghamton next hosts host Cornell at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday before welcoming Hartford to the Bearcats Baseball Complex for a weekend series. Six teams are separated by two wins in the current America East standings.
