ALBANY, N.Y. – Celeste Verdolivo scattered two runs on five hits, leading Albany (22-11, 10-1 AE) to a 5-2 win over Binghamton (15-26, 4-11 AE) in an America East softball on Wednesday afternoon at Albany Field. With the victory, the Great Danes sweep the three-game season series against the Bearcats.
The Bearcats jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by freshman shortstop
Marissa Braito. The Great Danes, however, came back to plate three unearned runs in the bottom of the same inning.
Binghamton pulled to within 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman outfielder
Chloe Morgan led off the frame with a triple and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher
Sara Herskowitz.
Once again, however, Albany answered right back with two more runs in the bottom of the same inning.
Verolivo, who also struck out three batters, improved to 15-3 on the season.
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Bienkowski pitched effectively through the first 4.2 innings. She did not allow an earned run, allowed just three hits and struck out five batters. Her record, however, fell to 3-6.
Herskowitz, who now has a team-best, five-game hitting streak, has a team-best 30 RBI so far this season. Braito continues to lead the team in hitting with a .325 batting average.
Binghamton returns home to host Maine in a conference series this weekend. The two teams will square off in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
