STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Junior pitcher
Rayn Gibson fired a four-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters, leading Binghamton (14-16, 3-3 AE) to a 1-0 victory over Stony Brook (16-12, 3-3 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at University Field. With the win, the Bearcats capture the three-game conference series against the Seawolves 2-1 after the teams split Saturday's doubleheader.
Gibson turned in the second complete-game shutout of her career and recorded double-digit strikeouts for the third time in her career. She is now 7-7 for the season, having gone 2-0 against Stony Brook with 18 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA.
"Rayn was at her best this weekend," head coach
Michelle Johnston said. "She was super focused and composed. The team felt that and was confident behind her. It was good to get the win today and we are ready to get right back to conference play with Albany on Wednesday."
For five innings, Gibson was locked in a scoreless duel with Melissa Rahrich of Stony Brook. In the top of the sixth inning, however, sophomore shortstop
Makayla Alvarez singled home freshman shortstop Melissa Braito with the go-ahead run.
Gibson's toughest test came in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Seawolves drew a walk and recorded a pair of singles to load the bases with one out. Gibson, however, struck out the final two batters of the inning to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Seawolves had the tying run on first base when Gibson struck out the final batter of the game.
Rahrich, who also scattered just four hits and struck out 10 batters, took the loss. Her record is now 7-9.
Stony Brook entered the weekend series leading the America East with a .311 batting average. The Bearcat pitching staff, however, held them to just a .253 average during the weekend. Gibson was joined in the effort by junior pitcher
Rozlyn Price and sophomore pitcher
Chelsea Howard.
