VESTAL, N.Y. - Nine Cornell pitchers held Binghamton baseball to six hits and the Big Red (12-22) did all their scoring in two innings to ease past BU (18-19) 5-2 Wednesday night at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. Â
The teams combined for more pitchers used (14) than hits (13) in the three-hour midweek game. After winning four in a row, BU has now dropped two straight.Â
Binghamton took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings. But Cornell countered with three runs - two unearned after an outfield error cleared the bases in the fifth. The Big Red then closed out the scoring with two runs in the ninth. Cornell closer John Natoli pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to seal it.
Sophomore shortstop
Jake Evans had two of Binghamton's six hits. The Bearcats stranded five runners in the first three innings and then were held without a hit for the final four innings as Cornell rolled through a lineup of bullpen arms.Â
In the first, BU took advantage of three walks to get on the board but left the bases loaded after a strikeout and fly ball dampened the outburst. Senior right fielder
Anthony Meduri gained the RBI with a bases-loaded walk. In the second, the first two BU batters reached but a double play - one of three Cornell turned - snuffed out the threat.Â
In the third inning, freshman first baseman
Kevin Gsell ripped an RBI single to left field, scoring junior second baseman
Alex Baratta, who had led off with a walk). But another double play spoiled the uprising.Â
Down 2-0, Cornell used two walks and a hit batter to set the table and then plated three on a single-error sequence. The Big Red added two insurance runs on three hits in the ninth.Â
Sophomore
Josh Kopcza went 3.0 innings and only allowed one hit. Freshman reliever
Dom DiRado worked 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.Â
Binghamton made two stellar defensive plays back-to-back in the third inning. With one out, sophomore center fielder
Shane Marshall raced into right center and came up with a great diving catch of a sinking liner in the gap. On the next play, Baratta ranged up the middle and dove to snare a hard grounder before firing to first to beat the runner.Â
The Bearcats next head to Baltimore to face UMBC in a weekend conference series. The teams will open with a doubleheader on Saturday.
