Softball Advances to Second Day of America East Tournament

Bearcats lose 7-3 to Stony Brook but stay alive with 5-3 win over Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore third baseman Sarah Benn drove in four runs and freshman pitcher Morgan Bienkowski recorded a complete-game victory as Binghamton (18-28) advanced to the second day of the America East Softball Tournament. The Bearcats lost 7-3 to Stony Brook in the first round at the Hartford Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon but bounced back with a 5-3 win over the host Hawks in an elimination game.

With the win, Binghamton moves on to another elimination game on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Bearcats' opponent has yet to be determined.

Benn hit a team-best .571 (4-for7) with three doubles and scored a pair of runs. Bienkowski, meanwhile, scattered three runs on five hits, issued just one walk and struck out five batters to record her second straight complete-game victory.

"We were hitting the ball good all day," head coach Michelle Johnston said. "We weren't hitting our spots in the first game but we got the momentum against Hartford. Morgan showed a lot of composure today for us and did a good job."

Benn, who was named second-team all-conference at the America East Awards Banquet on Tuesday night, broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning. Hartford got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning but Benn struck again in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI double.

From there, Bienkowski, who was named to the America East All-Rookie Team finished off the game with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh inning. Her record is now 5-6. The loss was tagged to Juliana Kocenski, who is now 14-17.

Sophomore designated player Hannah Lyons drove in the other two runs in the victory over Hartford. She finished 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

The 14 hits by Binghamton in the game against Hartford represents the most it has recorded in an America East Tournament game. The previous mark of 13 hits was set against Maine on May 8, 2015.

Against Stony Brook, the Bearcats had to claw their way out of an early 5-0 deficit. Benn scored on a RBI double by sophomore outfielder Lauren Martinez to get Binghamton on the scoreboard.

Stony Brook got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Bearcats scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to put within 6-3. Benn doubled in the first run and later scored on a pinch hit double by freshman Sophia Pappas.

The Seawolves added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Melissa Rahrich got the win, raising her record to 17-11. Junior Rayn Gibson took the loss, dropping her record to 7-11.

Binghamton held a 10-9 advantage in hits but the Seawolves got a game-high four RBI from Irene Rivera.

Sophomore shortstop Makayla Alvarez, finished the day 3-for-7 (.429) while junior outfielder Amanda Ricci went 2-for-5 (.400).

As a team, Binghamton hit .375 during the two games.
